Opening Night – Ivon Ulibarri & Café Mocha
June 21, 2013 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
What is Salsa Music?
“Thereʼs no substitute for hearing it so if you really want to know Salsa, come check us out!” says Ivon Ulibarri, a pioneer of Salsa Music in New Mexico. Ivon Ulibarri and Cafe Mocha is one of Albuquerque’s hottest Salsa bands, brewing an exciting blend of Son, Cha-Cha, Merengue, Cumbia, and other Latina styles from the Caribbean and beyond. This award winning vocalist and songwriter, has been entertaining for over 30 years! She and her Café Mocha Band, who took their name from her award winning song, are inspired by Latin Music artists such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Ruben Blades, Chick Corea and Oscar DʼLeon to name a few. The band covers a wide variety of songs in their live performances but youʼll find only original material on their recordings.
The multi-talented band includes 2 vocalists, 2 trumpets, congas, bass, piano and timbal. With many years of musical experience under their collective belts, when asked about their ages, they joke theyʼre all over 21. From opening for Tito Puente at Popejoy Hall to playing the Telluride Jazz Festival and South by Sourhwest to travelling to Havana as part of Cuban Cultural Studies, Ivon Ulibarri & Café Mocha have shown their talents are worthy of all the acclaim.
